IBM Research has four openings in Services Research in New York, USA, for world-class researchers at the junior and/or senior levels. Services research, a relatively new field, focuses on developing
innovative ways to design, manage and enhance service design and delivery in areas including enterprise IT, mobility, smarter infrastructure, government and healthcare. It is a multi-disciplinary effort, involving specialists in fields ranging from computer science to social science, and from statistics to user-centric design. Skills in design and delivery of IT infrastructure and applications, business process modeling and transformation, operations and quality engineering, and services systems are all
highly relevant to this field.
IBM Research is at the forefront of services research. And for good reason. For over 60 years, it has been one of the world’s premier research labs and now has more than 3000 research scientists and
engineers around the world. Its agenda includes discovering fundamental principles, developing scientific and engineering innovations, and using its results to change our world for the better.
IBM is recognized as a pioneer and leader in the services industry, with $60B in annual services revenue and offerings spanning commerce, manufacturing, healthcare, government, telecommunications and energy.
IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative alone is opening a vast new arena for services research. Examples of ongoing Services Research projects include: services delivery optimization, data-centric business
process modeling, services architecture for cloud computing, and heuristic algorithms for gathering and processing massive amounts of sensor data in real time for business process optimization,
healthcare services, etc.
IBM Research, the largest industrial Research lab in the world, offers a unique work environment. With its strong ties to academia and its eight world-wide labs in North America, Europe and Asia, it
is ideal for performing collaborative research that has impact not only on IBM’s business but also on the scientific community at large.
Two of the job openings are for permanent positions, and the other two are for fellowships (at the post-doctoral or more senior levels, and for up to two years). While candidates from all backgrounds
relevant to Services Research will be considered, IBM has a strong interest in strengthening its team in the broad application areas of cloud computing and Smarter Planet. Areas of interest include, but
are not limited to: (1) applied statistics, data mining and machine learning; (2) distributed application service architecture for deployment on cloud infrastructures; and (3) developing a science of service delivery (analogous to Computer Science, but focused on facilitating services rather than computing). The preferred candidate will have deep expertise and significant accomplishments in
one of the above areas.
